A Groundwater District Regulates Wells in Dimmit County

If you drill a water well in Dimmit County, the Wintergarden Groundwater Conservation District has rules you must follow.

The Wintergarden Groundwater Conservation District covers all of Dimmit, La Salle, and Zavala counties — about 4,195 square miles. Voters confirmed the district in 1998. It manages the underground aquifers that supply wells for farms, ranches, and homes.

The county gets about 22 inches of rain per year. That is not enough for consistent crops, so groundwater matters here. The district requires permits for new wells and sets rules on how much water can be pumped. If you are buying land or building outside city water service, contact the district before drilling. The Texas Water Development Board website has the district's management plan and contact details.
