Homestead Exemption
How to Get Your Homestead Exemption in Travis County
A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home and can save hundreds per year.
If you own and live in your home as of January 1, you can apply for a homestead exemption. It reduces the portion of your home's value that gets taxed. Texas school districts must give every homestead a $140,000 exemption. Other local taxing units may add more on top of that.
Apply online at taxpayer.justappraised.com or mail to TCAD at 850 East Anderson Lane, Austin, TX 78752. You need a Texas driver's license or state ID showing your home address. You do not have to reapply each year unless TCAD asks you to. There is no fee to apply.
