Extra Property Tax Help for Seniors and Disabled Homeowners

Homeowners 65 or older, or with a qualifying disability, can freeze their school district taxes.

Once you turn 65 or qualify as disabled under Social Security standards, you can get an additional exemption. This also freezes your school district taxes at the amount due when the exemption is first applied. The tax will not go up even if values rise — unless you add on to the home.

Surviving spouses who are at least 55 years old can keep this ceiling after their spouse passes. Apply through TCAD with proof of age or disability. Call the TCAD helpline at (512) 873-1560 during business hours.
