Homestead Exemption

How to Lower Your Property Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

If San Jacinto County is your main home, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces the value your taxes are based on.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main residence. Other local taxing units may offer more on top of that.

You apply with the San Jacinto County Appraisal District, not the tax office. The appraisal district's website is sjcad.org. The general filing deadline is before May 1, but check the appraisal district directly for current deadlines and any local options. You must live at the property as your main home to qualify.
