Most of San Jacinto County Uses Septic Systems, Not City Sewer
Outside Coldspring, almost no homes in San Jacinto County connect to public sewer lines — you need a permitted septic system.
In rural San Jacinto County, homes handle their own waste through on-site sewage facilities, called OSSFs. Septic systems are the most common type. Texas law requires a permit to install, repair, or change an OSSF. You cannot skip this step.
The local authorized agent — usually the county or a contracted inspector — must approve the design before work starts. TCEQ oversees the program statewide. Before you buy rural land or plan to build, check whether the property already has a permitted, working system. Repairs on failing systems also need permits. Contact the San Jacinto County offices or TCEQ for local permit contacts.
