Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill
If your home is your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces your taxable value.
Texas law requires every school district to give homeowners at least a $140,000 exemption on their main home. That means $140,000 of your home's value is not taxed by the school district. There are also extra exemptions for people age 65 and older and for people with disabilities.
To claim it, file an application with the Crockett County Appraisal District. You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license showing the property address. The general deadline is April 30 of the tax year — but verify the current deadline with the appraisal district, as rules can change. You only need to apply once unless your status changes.
