Mineral Rights

Oil and Gas Has Shaped Crockett County for Decades

If you buy land in Crockett County, find out whether mineral rights are included — they may have already been sold off.

Oil was discovered in Crockett County in 1925. Major production followed in the 1930s and 1940s. The Todd Ellenburger field, opened in 1945, was among the most productive. Ranching families leased mineral rights to oil companies, and those minerals often passed through separate chains of ownership over the decades.

When you buy land here, the mineral rights may or may not come with the surface. Always ask your title company and attorney to check the deed for a mineral reservation. The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) regulates oil and gas operations in the county. You can look up well records and production data by county on the RRC website.
