Homestead Exemption Cuts Your School Tax Bill in Lee County

Texas law requires school districts to subtract $140,000 from your home's taxable value if it is your main residence — you have to apply to get it.

If you own and live in a home in Lee County, you can apply for a homestead exemption. State law requires local school districts to exempt $140,000 of your home's appraised value from school taxes. Homeowners age 65 and older (or those who are disabled) get an extra $60,000 off on top of that.

You apply at the Lee Central Appraisal District in Giddings. The general deadline is before May 1, but check with Lee CAD for the current date — deadlines can shift. Other local taxing units may offer additional optional exemptions of up to 20 percent of appraised value. The Comptroller's exemptions page explains how all of these work.
