Water Wells
A Groundwater District Controls Well Permits in Lee County
Lee County is inside the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District, which means drilling or operating a water well requires a permit.
Rural property in Lee County often relies on private wells. The Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District (LPGCD) covers all of Lee and Bastrop counties. It manages the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer — the main underground water source in this area. Before you drill a new well or use an existing one for large amounts of water, you likely need a permit from the district.
The district was created in 1999 and confirmed by voters in 2002. It sets rules on how much water can be pumped and requires permits for wells that export water outside the district. If you are buying rural land or building a home that will use a well, check with LPGCD early. Their website is lostpineswater.org and has permit applications and current rules.
