Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Cuts Your School Tax Bill in Grimes County

Homeowners who live in their home can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces how much of the property value is taxed.

School districts in Grimes County — including Anderson-Shiro, Iola, Navasota, Richards, and Madisonville — each offer a $140,000 general homestead exemption. That means $140,000 of your home's value is not taxed by the school district.

Residents 65 or older or with a disability get an additional $60,000 off the school district portion. The county itself offers a $12,000 exemption for seniors and disabled persons. Apply through the Grimes County Appraisal District at grimescad.org. Check the site for current deadlines, since they can change.
