Most Rural Homes in Grimes County Use a Septic System
Outside of Navasota and other small towns, most Grimes County homes are not on a public sewer line. They use a septic system instead.
In rural Grimes County, most homes use a septic system. The official name is an on-site sewage facility, or OSSF. These systems treat and dispose of wastewater on your own land.
In Texas, you need a permit before you build, expand, or repair an OSSF. You also need an approved plan and a licensed installer. Who issues the permit depends on where you are. Inside a city, the city handles it. Outside city limits, the county or a TCEQ regional office handles it. TCEQ stands for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
If you are buying rural land in Grimes County, ask what type of septic system is on the property. Ask when it was last inspected. An old or undersized system can cost thousands of dollars to fix. The TCEQ website explains the rules and how to find your local permitting authority.
