Homestead Exemption

How to Lower Your Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

If your Wheeler County home is your main residence, you can file for a homestead exemption to lower your tax bill.

A homestead exemption lowers the value that is taxed on your main home. That means a smaller tax bill each year. You file the form with the Wheeler Central Appraisal District — not the tax office. The normal time to file is January 1 through April 30 of the tax year.

You can only claim this exemption on one property. It must be the home where you live. If you are 65 or older, or if you have a qualifying disability, you may be able to get extra exemptions on top of the basic one.

Deadlines and rules can change. Always check the current dates and forms with the Wheeler Central Appraisal District before you file. The Texas Comptroller's website also has a full list of exemptions you can review.
