STR Tax Obligations
Short-Term Rentals and Hotel Occupancy Tax in Travis County
If you rent your home short-term in Austin, you must collect and report Hotel Occupancy Tax.
If you rent out your home for short stays in Austin, you must collect the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) from your guests. Platforms like Airbnb often collect this tax for hosts. But as the property owner, you are still on the hook for filing quarterly reports with the City of Austin.
Missing a filing can bring penalties. If your rental is outside Austin city limits but still in Texas, different rules may apply. Check with Travis County and the Texas Comptroller to find out what applies to your address. For rentals inside Austin, visit austintexas.gov/str for the full rules.
