Hueco Tanks Has Ancient Rock Art and Strict Daily Visitor Limits
Hueco Tanks State Park protects thousands of ancient pictographs in the Chihuahuan Desert and limits daily visitors to preserve the site.
Hueco Tanks is a rocky desert site east of El Paso with thousands of years of human history. It holds pictographs — images painted on rock — made by Native peoples over thousands of years. Several tribes consider this a sacred place. The park issues only 70 permits per day for the North Mountain area to protect the images.
Activities include rock climbing, guided tours, hiking, bird watching, and stargazing. Camping is available at 20 sites. Entry is $7 for adults. Guided ranger programs cost extra. Always reserve in advance — the park fills up fast. Do not touch the rock art. For self-guided permits, call up to three months ahead.
