Know Your Hurricane Evacuation Zone Before Storm Season
Cameron County has defined evacuation zones for hurricanes — knowing yours before a storm arrives can save your life.
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 each year. Cameron County borders the Gulf of Mexico, making it directly vulnerable to storm surge and high winds. The county's Emergency Management office publishes interactive evacuation zone maps and printed route guides.
If you cannot evacuate on your own, you can register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR). Register online at STEAR.dps.texas.gov or call 2-1-1 any time. Note that the 2-1-1 line shuts down 72 hours before hurricane winds arrive — register well before a storm threatens. For general emergency info, contact Cameron County Emergency Management at (956) 547-7000.
