Fishing at Lake Bryan
Lake Bryan, a 829-acre reservoir five miles west of downtown Bryan, offers public bank and boat fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish.
Lake Bryan sits about five miles west of downtown Bryan off FM 1687 (Sandy Point Road). The 829-acre reservoir was built as a cooling pond for Bryan Texas Utilities' Dansby Power Plant, but it also offers public fishing access. Maximum depth is around 45 feet, and the lake contains riprap rock along the dam that forms the main habitat for bass.
Channel catfish are the most reliably productive target — they are abundant and respond well to natural baits fished from the bank or a boat. Largemouth bass average 14–16 inches near the riprap, with best action in spring and fall on crank baits and soft plastics. Crappie fishing picks up near courtesy docks in early spring using live minnows and jigs.
Public boat and bank access are available. Special bass limits and gear restrictions may apply, so consult the current TPWD regulations before you go. A valid Texas freshwater fishing license is required. Call Bryan Texas Utilities at 979-361-0861 for current lake conditions.
