Water History

Lake Texoma Was Created by a Federal Dam Authorized in 1938

Denison Dam on the Red River created Lake Texoma. It is a major federal water project that changed the county's economy and landscape.

Congress authorized Denison Dam in 1938. The dam was built on the Red River near Denison. It created Lake Texoma, a large reservoir that sits on the Texas-Oklahoma border.

The project brought construction jobs to the area. After it was done, the lake turned the region into a popular recreation spot. People come from across Texas and Oklahoma to fish, camp, and boat there.

The Army Corps of Engineers operates Denison Dam. The Corps also manages several recreation areas around the lake on both the Texas and Oklahoma sides. Lake Texoma is one of the larger reservoirs in the United States by surface area.
