Lake Whitney
Lake Whitney offers public fishing and hunting on Hill County land
Lake Whitney, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, sits partly in Hill County and offers public fishing, hunting, and camping.
Lake Whitney has about 23,500 surface acres and sits on the Brazos and Nolan rivers. It stretches across Bosque, Hill, and Johnson counties. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with public access at multiple parks and boat ramps.
Fishing is good for striped bass, white bass, catfish, and crappie. About 18,000 acres of Corps land around the lake — including parts of Hill County — are open to public hunting with a permit. A Texas fishing license is required. Check tpwd.texas.gov for current regulations and the Corps' Whitney Lake site for camping and hunting permit details.
