Two Main Rivers Shape the County
The Leon River drains the north and east, while Cowhouse Creek drains the west and south — both are central to the county's landscape.
Coryell County gets about 32 inches of rain per year on average. The Leon River and Cowhouse Creek are the two main waterways. Belton Lake also sits within county boundaries. These rivers and streams support white-tailed deer, turkey, bobcat, and a variety of birds and reptiles in the surrounding cedar, live oak, and pecan bottomlands.
Most river land is privately owned. If you are looking for fishing or paddling access, check Texas Parks and Wildlife for any public access points. The rivers can rise fast after heavy rain — see flood safety notes elsewhere in this county guide.
