Water Planning

Long-Term Water Supply Is an Active Planning Issue

Lubbock County relies on the Ogallala Aquifer and surface reservoirs for water. Long-term supply is a real concern.

The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) tracks water planning for every county. Lubbock County depends on two main sources. One is groundwater from the Ogallala Aquifer. The other is surface water from reservoirs like Lake Alan Henry. The Ogallala has been dropping for decades. The whole region is working to find new sources.

Buying rural land with a private well? Ask a licensed water well driller about water depth in that area. A well that worked fine 30 years ago may now be dry. Water tables vary a lot across the county. The TWDB posts county water planning data on their website. Check it before you buy.
