Mineral Rights in Travis County: What Landowners Should Know
Mineral rights in Texas can be owned separately from surface rights, and buyers should check whether those rights are included in a sale.
In Texas, mineral rights — including oil, gas, and other subsurface resources — can be owned separately from the land on top. This is called a severed mineral estate. When you buy property in Travis County, you may not automatically get the mineral rights. Read the deed carefully.
Travis County is not a major oil and gas production area, but this matters for rural and Hill Country parcels. The Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) regulates oil and gas activity in Texas. If you want to know about existing permits or activity on or near a property, search the RRC GIS viewer at rrc.texas.gov. Land and mineral owner resources are at rrc.texas.gov/about-us/audience-pages/land-mineral-owners/.
