Your Well Draws from a Shrinking Aquifer

Oldham County sits over the Ogallala Aquifer, the main water source for the Panhandle, but water is being used faster than it refills.

Most rural properties in Oldham County depend on private water wells drawing from the Ogallala Aquifer. This aquifer runs under much of the Texas Panhandle and is the largest in the United States. But water levels have been dropping for decades because pumping exceeds natural recharge.

If you buy rural land or plan to drill a well, ask about current water depth and well yield before you close. The Texas Water Development Board tracks the aquifer and has planning data for the region. Check twdb.texas.gov for groundwater data tools and well records.
