Vega: County Seat on the Mother Road
Vega became the county seat in 1915 and grew along Route 66, which is now Interstate 40 — it remains the commercial and government hub for Oldham County.
Vega sits about 30 miles west of Amarillo on Interstate 40, which follows the old U.S. Highway 66 corridor. The town's name comes from the Spanish word for meadow or plain. A railroad line through the area in 1909 helped the town grow, and the famous Route 66 highway brought more traffic and business through the mid-1900s.
Today Vega has grain elevators, county offices, and serves as a trade center for surrounding ranches and farms. The county courthouse and tax offices are here. Population has stayed small — under 1,000 residents for decades. If you are moving to rural Oldham County, Vega is where you handle most county business.
