Fire / Burn rules

Outdoor burning in Andrews County requires more than just no burn ban

Even when no burn ban is in place, Andrews County residents outside city limits must follow Texas state outdoor burning rules and check conditions before lighting any fire.

West Texas is dry. Andrews County can have dangerous fire conditions — high winds, low humidity, and dry soil. The county's official outdoor burning page is clear: no burn ban does not mean you can burn freely. State law sets rules on what, when, and how you can burn outside. Those rules are enforced by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Breaking the rules can lead to criminal charges and civil liability.

Before any outdoor burn in unincorporated Andrews County — meaning outside any city — do these things. Check the current burn ban status on the county website at co.andrews.tx.us. Read TCEQ's State of Texas Outdoor Burning Rules. Check wind and weather through the National Weather Service or the West Texas Mesonet. Call the Andrews County Sheriff's Office at 432-523-5545.

These rules apply only outside city limits. If you live inside the City of Andrews, call the city directly for its separate rules. Burn ban status can change fast. Always check the official county page — do not rely on word of mouth.
