Extra Tax Break for Homeowners 65 or Older

Homeowners who are 65 or older or who are disabled get an additional $60,000 school district exemption and may qualify for a tax freeze.

If you are 65 or older and own your home in Ector County, Texas law gives you an extra $60,000 exemption on top of the standard homestead exemption for the school district portion of your taxes. People who qualify as disabled under Social Security rules get the same deal.

One big benefit: your school district taxes may be frozen once you qualify. You apply with Form 50-114 at the Ector County Appraisal District. Surviving spouses aged 55 or older may also be eligible in some cases. Check the Comptroller's site or ECAD for the current rules.
