County History

Ozona Is the Only Town in Crockett County

Crockett County has one incorporated place — Ozona — and the rest of the county is open ranch land.

Crockett County covers about 2,806 square miles in southwestern Texas. Ozona is the county seat and the only town in the entire county. It sits on the western edge of the Edwards Plateau, about 82 miles southwest of San Angelo. The county is named for David Crockett, the frontiersman. It was officially organized in 1891, with Ozona chosen as the county seat after a rancher drilled a productive water well and donated land for public buildings.

Ranching — cattle, sheep, and Angora goats — has been the backbone of the local economy since the 1880s. The county has no other incorporated towns. If you live here outside of Ozona, you are in unincorporated county territory. That means county rules apply to your land, not city rules. Services like zoning, water, and trash may look very different than in a city.
