A Groundwater District Oversees Water Wells in Nacogdoches County

The Pineywoods Groundwater Conservation District regulates well drilling in Nacogdoches and Angelina counties — get a permit before drilling a high-volume well.

If you plan to drill a water well in Nacogdoches County, you answer to the Pineywoods Groundwater Conservation District (PGCD). The state created PGCD in 2001. It protects underground water in Nacogdoches and Angelina counties.

The district can require permits before you drill. It can also set spacing rules and limit how much water is pumped each day.

You need a permit if your well can produce more than 25,000 gallons per day. Most home wells stay well below that. But high-volume uses — like irrigation or a commercial business — usually need a permit.

Visit pgcd.org to see current rules, download forms, and find contact information. Rules can change, so check with the district before you start drilling.
