Property tax

Multiple property tax exemptions are available to Bexar County homeowners

Beyond the basic homestead exemption, Bexar County homeowners may qualify for more tax breaks based on age, disability, veteran status, or charity use.

The Bexar Central Appraisal District (BCAD) handles property tax breaks beyond the basic homestead exemption. The most common are the Over-65 break and the Disabled Person break. Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability can get one too. The Over-65 break also caps your school district taxes.

A veteran with a 100% service-connected disability may pay no tax on their main home. Surviving spouses of certain veterans may also qualify. The same goes for spouses of first responders killed on duty. Churches, charities, and nonprofits can get breaks on properties that qualify.

Each break has its own rules, forms, and steps. You cannot claim both the Over-65 and the Disabled Person break from the same taxing unit—but an eligible disabled person age 65 or older may receive both exemptions in the same year from different taxing units. Apply with BCAD, not the tax office. See the full list at bcad.org or call 210-242-2432.
