Hunting Public Land in and Near Childress County
Most hunting in Childress County requires access to private land, but a TPWD Annual Public Hunting Permit opens access to public hunting areas across Texas for a set fee.
Childress County itself is mostly private ranch and farm land. There is no state park inside the county. However, TPWD sells an Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit — currently around $48 per year — that lets you hunt on more than 180 public hunting areas across Texas. Nearby areas in the Panhandle region include Wildlife Management Areas where quail, dove, deer, and turkey are available.
The APH permit also covers fishing, hiking, and camping on participating areas. A lower-cost Limited Public Use permit covers non-hunting access. Permit prices and area availability can change each year. Check the TPWD public hunting page for a current list of areas, maps, and rules before heading out. Some areas require a separate drawn permit on top of the APH.
