Climate and Flooding
Orange County Gets More Rain Than Almost Anywhere in Texas
Orange County averages about 56 inches of rain per year — among the highest in the state — which makes flooding a persistent concern for homeowners.
Orange County is in the wettest corner of Texas. It gets about 56 inches of rain a year. The land is flat and low — mostly sea level to 30 feet. Water drains slowly here. Hurricane Harvey flooded the county badly in 2017. Flooding happens here more often than in most of Texas.
Before buying property here, check the FEMA flood map for your address. If your property is in a high-risk flood zone, your lender will likely require flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Even homes outside a high-risk zone can flood. FEMA released new preliminary flood maps for Orange County in January 2025. Look up your address at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center to see the current map.
