Seminole Canyon: Ancient Rock Art Near Del Rio

Seminole Canyon State Park near Comstock protects pictographs painted by people who lived in this region thousands of years ago, and offers guided tours to see them up close.

The park is at 434 Park Road 67, Comstock, TX 78837 — about 45 miles west of Del Rio along Highway 90. Pictographs at the Fate Bell Shelter were created by canyon dwellers, with this style of rock art dated to roughly 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The paintings show shamans, animals, and figures under a large cliff overhang.

Guided tours to Fate Bell Shelter run Wednesday through Sunday and cost $8 for adults (ages 13 and up) and $5 for children 5-12. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (512) 389-8900 or booking online. Park entry itself costs $4 per person; children 12 and under are free. The park also has about 10 miles of hiking trails and 46 campsites.
