Septic system permits in Brazos County

If you build or replace a septic system on unincorporated Brazos County land, you need a permit from the Brazos County Health Department before you start.

In Texas, septic systems are called on-site sewage facilities, or OSSFs. The state sets the base rules under TCEQ's Chapter 285. Brazos County can add more rules on top of those. Call the Brazos County Health Department to learn what the local rules are.

Before you install, replace, or make big changes to a septic system on unincorporated land, you need a county permit. A licensed site evaluator or a professional engineer must check the site first. Permit fees are due after the county looks over your application and issues an Authorization to Construct.

Aerobic systems need a maintenance contract with a certified provider for regular checks. Conventional systems should be pumped on a set schedule — ask the county how often. Call the Brazos County Health Department at 979-361-4440 or email healthdept@brazoscountytx.gov. You can also check TCEQ's OSSF pages for statewide rules.
