Septic / OSSF Permits
Septic Systems in Travis County: What You Need to Know
Homes outside city sewer service need an approved septic system, and Travis County oversees the permitting process.
No city sewer nearby? Your home needs a septic system. Texas calls it an on-site sewage facility, or OSSF. In Travis County, you need a permit before you install, change, or repair one. You also need an approved plan. The county runs this process under County Code Chapter 448.
If your land sits over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, the rules get stricter. That aquifer supplies drinking water for the whole region. The county limits how close a septic system can be to it. Lots in those areas often need more land per home to get a permit approved. To apply, go to the Travis County permitting center at 700 Lavaca Street, Suite 540, in Austin, or call (512) 854-4215.
