Short-term rental rules in College Station

College Station requires an annual permit and monthly hotel occupancy tax filing for any home rented for fewer than 30 days at a time.

If you rent a home, apartment, or accessory unit in College Station for fewer than 30 days in a row — including through Airbnb or VRBO — you need a short-term rental permit. The permit costs $100 to apply and $75 to renew each year, plus a $100 inspection fee. The city's rules cover single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, multi-family units, and manufactured homes.

Permit holders must have working smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors where gas or propane is used, and at least one fire extinguisher per floor. You must also give guests a brochure with neighborhood details, your contact information, and local emergency numbers.

Even if Airbnb or another platform collects state hotel taxes for you, you are still responsible for College Station's local hotel occupancy tax. The rate is 7% on stays of $2 or more. You must file and pay it directly to the city by the 20th of the following month. Late filing brings a 15% penalty for each 30-day period you are delinquent. Apply or ask questions at cstx.gov or call Code Enforcement at 979-764-6363.
