South Padre Island Is a Major Bird Migration Hotspot
South Padre Island, in eastern Cameron County, sits along a major flyway where millions of birds cross the Gulf of Mexico each spring and fall.
The island is one of the first land masses migratory birds reach after crossing the Gulf. In spring especially, exhausted songbirds, raptors, and shorebirds stack up on the island. South Padre Island is a node in the World Birding Center network, a nine-site trail of birding destinations along the Rio Grande Valley.
The TPWD South Padre Island Loop wildlife trail links viewing spots along the island and nearby coast. Cameron County's subtropical climate also supports year-round resident species from Mexico not found elsewhere in the U.S. No permit is needed to birdwatch on public areas. Check tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wildlife/wildlife-trails for trail maps.
