Special-Needs Residents Can Pre-Register for Evacuation Help
People with disabilities or medical needs who cannot evacuate on their own can register with the state ahead of hurricane season for free transportation assistance.
The State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR) is a free program for people who need help evacuating during a disaster. This includes people with disabilities, those with medical needs, and anyone who has no way to get out on their own. You can register online at stear.texas.gov or by calling 2-1-1.
Important: the 2-1-1 phone line is disconnected 72 hours before hurricane winds arrive. Do not wait until a storm is coming — register before hurricane season starts in June. This is especially relevant in Cameron County, which is in a direct hurricane path along the Gulf Coast.
