Short-Term Rentals in Dallas Must Register with the City

The City of Dallas requires all Airbnb-style rentals to register and collect hotel occupancy tax.

The City of Dallas calls a short-term rental any unit rented for fewer than 30 days in a row. In June 2023, Dallas passed ordinance Chapter 42B. That rule says all short-term rental owners must register with the city. In December 2023, a court injunction stopped enforcement of that rule. A legal fight is still going on. Check the current status before you rely on any of these rules.

Owners must also collect Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) from guests. You pay that tax to the city each month. Other cities in Dallas County — like Irving, Grand Prairie, or Garland — have their own rules. Check with each city directly. This note covers the City of Dallas only. See the City of Dallas short-term rentals page at dallascityhall.com for the latest.
