Multiple Tax Rates

Travis County Has Over 180 Taxing Entities

Your property tax bill in Travis County is the sum of rates from many different taxing units — not just one.

Travis County has more than 180 taxing units. A taxing unit is any government body that can put a line on your property tax bill. The list includes the county, school districts like Austin ISD, Pflugerville ISD, and Manor ISD, cities, Austin Community College, and dozens of special districts. Municipal Utility Districts and Emergency Services Districts are two common types.

Every unit sets its own tax rate. Your total bill adds up all the rates for every unit that covers your address. Two homes a mile apart can have very different totals. Always check the full combined rate when you compare properties. Do not just look at the county or school rate. The Texas Comptroller's Travis County directory lists all active taxing units.
