Demographics
Travis County's Population and Diversity
Travis County grew from a small farming region to a metro area of over a million people, with significant Hispanic, Black, and Anglo populations.
A 2014 census estimate put Travis County's population at about 1.15 million. At that time, roughly 50% were Anglo, 33.8% were Hispanic, and 8.9% were African American. About 41% of residents held college degrees — higher than the Texas state average.
Travis County started as a farming area with Anglo and Tejano settlers. Over time, waves of new residents came for government jobs, the University of Texas, and later the tech economy. East Austin has long been home to a large Black community. In recent decades, rising costs have shifted who lives where across the county.
