Groundwater Comes From the Trinity Aquifer — With Limits
The Trinity Aquifer underlies McLennan County, but heavy pumping has caused significant water level declines along the I-35 corridor.
The Trinity Aquifer is a deep confined aquifer under much of Central Texas. It supplies municipal and domestic water in McLennan County. But the aquifer has experienced some of the largest water level drops in the state — ranging from 350 to more than 1,000 feet in parts of the I-35 corridor.
Most cities in the county now rely more on surface water, including Lake Waco, to reduce stress on the aquifer. The Southern Trinity Groundwater Conservation District manages wells in McLennan County. If you plan to drill a private well, check with the district first at stgcd.org.
