A 30,000-acre federal wildlife refuge sits in Liberty County

The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge protects bottomland hardwood forest along the Trinity River and is open to hunting and fishing by the public.

The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge covers about 30,000 acres along the Trinity River in Liberty County. It was established in 1994 to protect bottomland hardwood forests that had once been far larger. The refuge supports over 200 bird species, 60 fish species, 40 mammals, and more than 635 plant species.

The refuge is open to hunting for white-tailed deer, duck, rabbit, and squirrel. Most hunts require a permit through the Texas Parks and Wildlife draw system. Waterfowl hunting at Champion Lake is handled directly by the refuge office at 601 FM 1011 Rd in Liberty (phone: 936-336-9786). Fishing is also available from the Champion Lake pier.
