Coastal windstorm insurance

Most Chambers County Homes Need Windstorm Coverage

Chambers County is one of 14 Texas coastal counties where private insurers often will not write windstorm coverage, leaving the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) as the backup option.

TWIA is a state-created insurer of last resort for wind and hail in coastal Texas. Chambers County is fully within the TWIA eligibility area. That means if a private insurer turns down your windstorm application, you can apply to TWIA instead.

To qualify, you must first be denied by at least one authorized private insurer. Newer structures also need a certificate showing they were built to meet windstorm building codes. Properties in certain FEMA flood zones built after September 1, 2009 must also show proof of flood insurance.

TWIA does not cover flood damage. You need a separate flood policy for that — through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurer. Check your FEMA flood zone on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center before you close on a property.
