Vehicle Registration
Vehicle registration in Fort Bend County uses Two Steps, One Sticker
Fort Bend County is in the Houston area emissions testing zone, so vehicles must pass an emissions test before registration renewal.
Texas eliminated the safety inspection requirement for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Fort Bend County is in the Houston-Galveston emissions area, so most gas-powered vehicles that are 2 to 24 model years old must still pass an emissions-only test at a certified station before registration. There is no longer a separate safety inspection step.
After you pass inspection, renew your registration online, by mail, or at the Fort Bend County Tax Assessor-Collector's office. One sticker goes on your windshield.
Some vehicles are exempt. These include electric vehicles, diesel vehicles under a certain weight, and vehicles more than 24 model years old. Check TxDMV or drivetexas.org for the full list and to find a nearby inspection station.
