Williamson County Vehicles Still Need an Emissions Test

Safety inspections are no longer required to renew registration in Texas, but Williamson County vehicles still require a passing emissions inspection.

Texas no longer requires an annual safety inspection for most non-commercial vehicles. That is statewide. But Williamson County is part of the Austin-area emissions zone. That means your car still needs a passing emissions test. You cannot renew your registration without it.

You can renew your registration online, by mail, or in person. The Williamson County Tax Office handles registration and title transfers. That office is also where you go for vehicle-related services. Check current rules at txdmv.gov or call the Williamson County Tax Office at 512-943-1601.
