Vehicle Registration

Liberty County drivers do not need an emissions test to register their vehicle

Liberty County does not require an emissions test. As of January 1, 2025, most vehicles also no longer need a safety inspection before renewing registration.

Texas only requires emissions tests in 17 counties. Those are mostly near Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and El Paso. Liberty County is not one of them. No emissions test is needed here.

Safety inspections were also dropped. As of January 1, 2025, most passenger vehicles in Texas no longer need a safety inspection before registration renewal. That rule was removed statewide.

To renew your registration, you have three options: online, by mail, or in person. The Liberty County Tax Office has three locations: Liberty (3210 Hwy 90), Cleveland (304 Campbell), and Dayton (1300 West Clayton St). You can also renew at TxDMV.gov.
