Registering your car in Hill County: what changed in 2025
As of January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles in Hill County no longer need a safety inspection before registration — but commercial vehicles still do.
Texas got rid of the safety inspection step for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Hill County is not one of the 17 counties that still require an emissions test. So most Hill County passenger cars can skip the inspection and register straight away. Commercial vehicles still need an inspection — that rule did not change.
You can register online, by mail, or in person. The Hill County Tax Assessor-Collector office is on S. Covington St. in Hillsboro. You still need proof of liability insurance. Check TxDMV for current fees and rules, as they can change.
