Vehicle Registration

How to register your vehicle in Smith County

As of January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires a safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles before registration renewal. Smith County is not an emissions county, so you simply pay your registration fee to the Smith County Tax Assessor-Collector or online.

As of January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles in Texas no longer need a safety inspection before registration renewal. Smith County is not one of the 17 Texas counties that require an emissions test, so there is no inspection step for most Smith County residents. You pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee when you renew — it is collected at registration and replaces the old inspection fee. One sticker goes on your windshield to show registration is current.

You must renew by the last day of your registration month. If you are new to Texas, you have 30 days to register your vehicle after you establish Texas residency. New residents whose vehicles are registered in one of the 17 emissions counties must still pass an emissions test, but Smith County is not on that list. Check the official sources listed below for current fees and locations.
