Vehicle Registration in Travis County: Two Steps, One Sticker

Travis County uses the Two Steps, One Sticker system, combining your vehicle inspection and registration renewal.

In Travis County, vehicle registration and an emissions inspection are linked in one program. Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, but Travis is one of 17 counties that still require a passing emissions test first, at a certified station. Then you renew your registration — online, by mail, or in person at the Travis County Tax Office. You end up with one sticker for your windshield.

The Travis County Tax Office handles registrations at 2433 Ridgepoint Drive in Austin. Call (512) 854-9473 or visit txdmv.gov to find local offices. Most people can renew online after passing inspection. Heavy-duty vehicles and diesels follow different rules — check TxDMV for details.
