Fort Bend County regulates water and wastewater connections in unincorporated areas

Outside city limits in Fort Bend County, the county sets rules for how you hook up to water and sewer.

Outside city limits, the area is called unincorporated. Fort Bend County — not a city — sets the rules there. Those rules cover how new homes and businesses connect to water and sewer.

If you build or divide land in an unincorporated area, you need drainage plan approval. The Fort Bend County Drainage District handles that. Talk to them early. The county can also limit utility hookups in some spots to manage growth.

No city sewer nearby? Then you likely need a septic system. TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) is the state agency that sets the rules for septic. The county's water and wastewater rules are posted on the Fort Bend County website. Check there first, then call the Drainage District with questions.
