Water Wells and Groundwater in La Salle County

Much of rural La Salle County relies on groundwater, and well records are searchable through state databases.

La Salle County is mostly rural. Many properties outside Cotulla use private water wells. There is no public water system for most of the area.

Before you buy rural land here, check if a working well already exists. Find out which aquifer it taps into. An aquifer is an underground layer of rock that holds water.

The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) keeps a public database of well records. Records go back decades. You can search by county and location.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has a tool called the Water Well Report Viewer. It holds over 800,000 scanned driller reports. Those reports show well depth, how the well was built, and which aquifer it uses.

La Salle County sits in the dry brush country of South Texas. Water depth and availability can vary a lot from one spot to another. If you plan to drill a new well, the driller must be licensed. Licensed well drillers must file reports with the state.
